Anatolii Hnatiuk's Theatrical Dream: Crafting Roles with His Son
In the world of theater, few actors are fortunate enough to have roles crafted specifically for them. This unique opportunity has become a reality for Anatolii Hnatiuk, a celebrated People's Artist of Ukraine, thanks to the creative collaboration with his son, Bohdan Hnatiuk.
An Unlikely Path to the Stage
Bohdan's journey to the theatrical world is as unconventional as it is inspiring. Originally steering clear of the open world of performing arts, he chose to study sociology at Kyiv's prestigious Taras Shevchenko University, influenced by his introspective nature and a desire to avoid the pressures that plagued his father.
"I asked Bohdan, 'Why not try theater?' but he was too shy, " Anatolii recalls. "He witnessed my struggles and stress over the roles; it was not for him."
The Inevitable Pull of Theater
Despite his initial career as a sociologist, Bohdan couldn't resist the call of storytelling and eventually began writing stories and plays. His breakthrough came when he approached the Kyiv Academic Workshop of Theatre Arts 'Suzirya' with his script. Lacking formal training, he nonetheless impressed Artistic Director Oleksii Kuzhelnyi with his vision.
Crafting Dreams: A Father-Son Duo
Since 2017, Bohdan has been both writing and directing plays, some featuring his father, Anatolii, in roles that highlight the elder Hnatiuk's energetic and dynamic presence. This collaboration has been a dream come true for Anatolii, who relishes performing in roles tailored to his strengths.
"Actors can only dream of having a playwright pen roles just for them, " Anatolii shares enthusiastically. "Bohdan writes with me in mind, understanding my potential and energy."
Their productions have become a staple at the Suzirya Theater, showcasing Bohdan's evolution from novice to a respected director and playwright. This partnership is not just a testament to familial bonds but also a beacon of creative synergy.
