Zimmer is deprived of a chance for an "Oscar": the music of "Dune 2" is in danger
In the world of the film industry, there is always room for surprises. This time it concerns one of the most famous composers of our time — Hans Zimmer. His score for Dune 2 won't be nominated for an Oscar, and here's why.
Too familiar a tune?
The score for "Dune 2" was threatened by the rules set by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It turns out that sequels cannot use more than 20% of existing themes. Reportedly, Zimmer exceeded this limit by using more than 20% of the material from the theme music of the first part of "Dune".
"In the case of sequels and franchises, the score should not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music from previous films."
This decision came as a surprise to many, because Hans Zimmer is a legendary name in the world of cinema. He already won an Oscar for the soundtrack to the cartoon "The Lion King" and created iconic scores for such films as "Gladiator" and "Interstellar".
New horizons for Zimmer
Although "Dune 2" is not a candidate for "Oscar", it is not the end for the musical genius. Hans Zimmer still has a chance to win an award for his work in Steve McQueen's new World War II film Blitz. In addition, "Dune 2" may be honored at other prestigious ceremonies, such as the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and Grammys.
Historical context and choosing a new path
This is not the first time that the rules of the Academy have become the cause of discussion. Similar situations have happened before. But this is exactly what makes the industry so interesting and dynamic. Zimmer, without a doubt, will continue to create musical masterpieces, and his fans expect new impressions from future projects.
