"Black Raven" Director Reveals Actors' Roles in Ukraine Conflict
The artistic world often mirrors the realities of life, and Taras Tkachenko's historical drama "Black Raven" is no exception. This film, based on Vasyl Shkliar's novel, has seen its team members transition from cinematic storytellers to real-life defenders of Ukraine amid the Russian invasion.
From Cinema to the Battlefield: A Cinematic Team's Journey
Upon the Russian invasion, many from the "Black Raven" crew found themselves swapping their scripts for service uniforms. Taras Tkachenko himself joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2022, embodying the spirit of resilience his films portray.
"It's not something I want to comment on, " Tkachenko shared about leading actor Taras Tsymbaliuk's decision not to enlist. "He might be contributing in other ways—through volunteering or donating."
Behind the Camera: The Untold Stories of Courage
The film's cast, including actors like Volodya Rashchuk, Danya Mireskin, and Andriy Fedinchyk, have taken up arms, while second director Taras Rybalchenko is credited with downing seven enemy drones. Tragically, prop master Tymofiy Boyko was killed in action near Kherson, a loss that resonates deeply with the team.
A Legacy of Tenacity and Artistry
"Black Raven, " long anticipated since its novel release in 2009, finally hit screens in 2019 after several failed attempts to bring Shkliar's vision to life. The film, a tribute to Ukraine's historical struggle, was produced with Shkliar's active participation, ensuring its fidelity to the novel’s spirit.
Tkachenko reflects on his collaboration with Shkliar as a path of compromises but ultimately successful in capturing the "indomitable spirit" of the story. The film underscores a poignant message: "The losses in fighting are always less than in occupation."
"I wanted to give Ukrainians the right to aggression, " Tkachenko remarks, a sentiment that resonates ever more strongly amidst current events.
