Indie folk (English Indie folk, independent folk music) is a musical genre created in the 1990s by songwriters from the indie rock community, influenced by folk music and classical country. Indie Folk combines the catchy tunes of indie rock with the acoustic sound of modern folk. The masterminds of the genre and early performers include Elliott Smith, Will Oldham, Ani DiFranco and Dan Bern. Among modern foreign performers of the genre, Kings of Convenience and José González can certainly be noted, whose manner of performance and voice have been repeatedly compared to Nick Drake!
