The Resilience of Oles Sanin's Vision
In the realm of cinematic storytelling, Oles Sanin emerges as a beacon of resilience and creativity. Renowned for his films "Mamay" and "The Guide", Sanin recently faced unprecedented challenges while bringing to life his latest historical drama, "Dovbush". Initially set to release in 2021, the film's premiere was postponed due to the pandemic and the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Yet, as fate would have it, these delays only enriched the film with a deeper, more resonant timbre.
A Personal Battle: Preparation and Loss
Sanin's narrative is interwoven with personal preparation and loss. As the tension of impending conflict loomed, Sanin readied himself and his family for the unknown. “I didn’t sleep at all on the night of February 24, ” he recalls, vividly recounting the surreal experience of boarding a nearly empty train to Kyiv amidst the chaos.
"We were haunted by the scent of something dreadful about to tear apart, a phantom of destruction, " says Sanin, reflecting on his intuitive foresight.
The Indomitable Spirit of Creativity
Despite the turmoil, Sanin continued to engage in the creative process, presenting "Dovbush" to military audiences across the country. With a projector and a laptop in tow, he visited hospitals and military units, sharing snippets of his work. This intimate engagement with viewers offered Sanin a fresh perspective on his audience.
"I’ve finally begun to understand and feel the audience, " Sanin shares, noting the direct and unfiltered feedback from military personnel who attended his screenings.
A Legacy of Courage and Integrity
Sanin’s life and career reflect the steadfast belief that no one will defend our land but ourselves—a theme resonant in "Dovbush". His dedication extends beyond filmmaking; he actively supports the Ukrainian military, collaborating with actors like Oleksiy Gnatkovskyi to raise funds for essential supplies.
As Sanin anticipates future projects, he remains committed to capturing stories of valor and resilience, ensuring that the sacrifices of those like actor Yakiv Tkachenko, who bravely fought and fell in defense of Ukraine, are remembered.
