Potap Lashes Out at New Cultural Travel Restrictions in Ukraine

Olexiy Potapenko, better known by his stage name Potap and more recently as Slavic Balagan, has voiced strong disapproval of this decision. The ministry's project of amending the Cabinet of Ministers' resolution has instated temporary travel restrictions for cultural figures, which came into effect on March 3.

The new rules specifically target Ukrainian men of conscription age within the cultural and media sectors, restricting them from crossing Ukraine's borders. The motivation behind these restrictions is to prevent the misuse of travel privileges, as previously, 20% of men touring abroad did not return. "Ukrainian artists on the international stage support the state, back the president, and raise hundreds of millions for our armed forces, and yet the Ministry of Culture is undermining these efforts!" he exclaimed on Instagram.

Potap, who currently resides abroad and has previously given an interview to a Russian journalist, expressed his frustration on social media. He argued that artists play a critical role in reminding the world about the ongoing war in Ukraine and in raising funds to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The controversy has also affected other members of the cultural community. Notably, Ukrainian band "Boombox" had to reconsider their planned concert tour due to these new restrictions.
