In the heart of Ukrainian culture and literature, the legacy of Dmitro Kapranov remains vibrant and influential, even a year after his untimely passing. At just 56, Kapranov left an indelible mark on the world of Ukrainian literature, and his influence continues to resonate through the efforts of his twin brother, Vitalii Kapranov.

Honoring a Legacy: A Year in Reflection

The memory of Dmitro Kapranov is more than just a whisper of the past—it's a powerful force that continues to inspire and drive those he left behind. Vitalii Kapranov, his twin brother and lifelong collaborator, has taken it upon himself to honor Dmitro's memory in a way that is as unique as their bond.

"Relationships with death and the deceased are something that shouldn't be relegated to others, " Vitalii reflects. "Since our situation is unique—being two halves of a whole—I cannot rely on others."

Crafting a Monument: A Symbol of Connection

In a poignant tribute, Vitalii crafted a monument for his brother—a task that took him on a journey of learning and self-discovery. Inspired by their shared roots in the Scythian lands of southern Ukraine, the monument features a Scythian statue, symbolizing their heritage and shared history. This personal project was not just about stone and chisel; it was about stitching together the fragments of a shared life into a lasting tribute.

"I didn't try to pretend to be Michelangelo, " he explains. "The main thing is symbolism—a Scythian statue as a symbol, a Cossack face, a kobza, a book, a sword, and an eight-pointed star as a symbol of Ukrainian culture."

Continuing the Kapranov Legacy: Upholding the Brand

While the physical presence of the Kapranov brothers is now singular, Vitalii insists on carrying forward their collective dreams and projects. The projects they initiated together remain a priority, with Vitalii determined to complete them, ensuring the presence of 'Kapranov' in the Ukrainian cultural landscape.

"Unfortunately, the 'Kapranov Brothers' as an entity ceased to exist a year ago. I will try to support the brand, to complete what we started, " says Vitalii.

The Future of Ukrainian Culture: A Call to Resilience

Dmitro Kapranov's contributions to Ukrainian literature and culture were monumental, standing firm against the tides of Russification. As Vitalii navigates this new chapter, he embodies the resilience and passion that defined their work. In a world changed by war and loss, the Kapranov legacy is a beacon for future generations, reminding us of the power of words and the enduring spirit of cultural identity.
