Why Okean Elzy Refuses to Compete: The Story Behind Their Decision
In a candid revelation, Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, the charismatic frontman of the legendary Ukrainian band Okean Elzy, unfolded the intriguing story of why the band has vowed never to compete in festivals again.
The Unforgettable Festival Experience
It was at a notable event known as "Perlyny Sezonu" where Okean Elzy clinched a victory in the preliminary round, earning them a trip to Kyiv. The stakes were high, as the ultimate winner would seize the opportunity to record a song in a professional studio. However, the festival's competitive nature unveiled a twist neither the band nor their fans had anticipated.
"We performed second out of thirty participating bands and scored 118 points, a feat we believed was near the maximum, " Vakarchuk recounted. "But in the end, another impressive band also scored 118 points. Much to our dismay, the judges decided there could only be one winner, and it wasn't us."
A Lesson in Resilience and Ingenuity
Instead of the coveted studio time, Okean Elzy was awarded four tracksuits. With their dreams slightly dashed but spirits undeterred, the band made a decisive move. They sold three of the tracksuits and gifted the fourth to a sound engineer they hoped would help them record an album.
"With the money from the tracksuits, we managed to buy some studio time to record our single 'Budynok zi Skla', " Vakarchuk shared.
This experience led to a significant turning point. The band resolved never to participate in any competition that ranked participants. This bold decision has stood the test of time, even against the allure of global platforms like Eurovision.
Looking Ahead: A Firm Stand
This incident not only shaped the band's approach to their career but also highlighted their belief in artistic integrity over competitive accolades. Despite the industry's competitive nature, Okean Elzy's journey serves as a reminder of resilience and the value of staying true to one's principles. As they continue to make music that resonates with fans worldwide, their story encourages artists to forge their own paths without the constraints of conventional competition.
