On September 7, Venice witnessed another emotional triumph in world cinema. Pedro Almodovar won the Golden Lion for his new film "The Room Next Door", which explores the themes of the climate crisis and euthanasia.

Almodovar and his English-language debut

This film was the first English-language project for the Spanish director. Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore played the main roles brilliantly in "The Room Next Door". According to the plot, the main character, a military correspondent who is terminally ill with cancer, turns to her old friend with a request to be by her side during euthanasia.

"This is not a political issue, but a human issue, " Almodovar said.

Spectacular standing ovation in Venice

The premiere of the tape caused an unprecedented 18-minute standing ovation. Isabel Huppert, head of the international jury, praised the film for its sensitive and non-melodramatic coverage of important issues.

Other winners of the festival

The best actress was Nicole Kidman for the movie "Girl". Heroine Kidman is an influential CEO who risks everything for love with a younger intern. Nicole was unable to attend the ceremony due to the recent loss of her mother.

"This award is hers (it's about the mother - ed.) - she shaped me, directed and created me, " the actress wrote in her letter.

Vincent Landon was recognized as the best actor for his role in the movie "Quiet Son" about the influence of radical ideas on the family. And the award for the best direction was won by Brady Corbett for the movie "Brutalist".

Cinematic horizons

In addition to the winners, the festival presented a number of other important films, including Olga Zhurba's documentary "Songs of the Slowly Burning Land", which drew attention to the problems of captivity.

The Venice Film Festival 2024 became a real platform for deep and emotional cinematographic works that left neither the jury nor the audience indifferent. Almodóvar's victory is another testament to his skill and ability to touch the deepest chords of the human soul.
