Olexandra Kolsova Reveals Harassment in Music Industry
Stepping into the spotlight, the Ukrainian singer and frontwoman of the band "Krykhitka, " Olexandra Kolsova, bravely opened up about the persistent challenges women face in the music industry. During a recent podcast, the 43-year-old artist shared her personal encounters and those of her colleagues with harassment from male artists.
A Candid Revelation by Kolsova
Kolsova's revelations were both eye-opening and disheartening, as she recounted the various forms of harassment women often endure in music circles. According to her, female artists frequently experience unwanted advances and inappropriate comments when working in male-dominated environments. "Whenever you entered a professional setting organized by men, you were subject to peculiar remarks and insinuations, " she highlighted.
"I won't share harassment stories because I was lucky to fend off advances before they escalated. But many of my colleagues weren't as fortunate, " Kolsova confessed, emphasizing the need for change.
The Competitive Edge and Male Ego
Kolsova also pointed out how male artists sometimes perceive female success as a threat. She recalled an incident where a male artist saw her new album release as a personal challenge. Such rivalry, she noted, often fuels further harassment. "There was a time a young male band threw burning cigarettes in my dressing room, " she recounted, illustrating the lengths to which some would go.
A Call for Change in the Industry
Having navigated these turbulent waters herself, Kolsova expressed hope that today's female artists face fewer such incidents. Yet, the past remains a stark reminder of the industry's shortcomings. Olexandra's journey from a military town in Russia to a celebrated singer in Ukraine underscores her resilience and passion for music.
Her experiences spark discussions on the broader issue of respect and equality within the industry. Advocating for change, Kolsova's voice adds to the growing chorus demanding a safer, more inclusive space for women in music.
