Indian director Soham Shah is raising a wave of outrage in the film world by suing Netflix for plagiarism. According to him, the popular series "The Squid Game" is a copy of his film "Luck", which was released back in 2009.

The director accuses Netflix of plagiarism

Shah claims that the plot, characters and atmosphere of The Squid Game are strikingly similar to his own film. According to the official synopsis, Luck is a story about a group of people who are recruited by a criminal leader to participate in a series of tests that test their luck factor. Players all over the world placed bets on them.

"The basic plot, characters, themes, mood, setting and sequence of events of The Squid Game are strikingly similar to Luck, negating any possibility that such similarities may be coincidental, " Soham Shah's lawsuit states.

Netflix reaction

Netflix, in turn, called the accusations baseless. Company representatives assure that the script for "Squid Game" was created and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk and they are ready to vigorously defend their rights.

"This lawsuit has no merit. The script for The Squid Game was created and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk, and we intend to vigorously defend this matter, " Netflix said.

Historical context and consequences

Soham Shah's film "Luck" was released worldwide in July 2009, gaining popularity in cinemas in India, Great Britain, the United States and the UAE. According to the lawsuit, Netflix had access to the film through its extensive distribution and marketing.

Shah also accuses the streaming platform of infringing his copyright by creating further content based on The Squid Game, including a reality show set for release in 2023 and an immersive theater planned for October in New York.

Results and forecasts

This situation sets a precedent in the cinematic world, because copyright issues are becoming more and more relevant in the era of globalization and streaming services. If the court sides with Soham Shah, it could have a significant impact on the entertainment content market and the operations of Netflix.
