Ukrainian representatives at Eurovision 2024, Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil, found themselves at the center of a scandal due to the criticism of linguist Iryna Farion. A well-known professor of the Ukrainian language department of the Lviv Polytechnic University expressed doubts about the nicknames of the stars, calling them "strange".

Stars' response to criticism

At a press conference before a big joint concert in Kyiv, alyona alyona and Jerry Heil responded to the remarks. A video of this event appeared on the page of "Hromadskyi" in H. alyona alyona reacted with humor, noting that it makes no sense to respond to aggression with aggression.

"Responding to bullying with bullying is sowing negativity. To come up and say why Iryna and not Yaryna? It's something like that, I don't know. We can measure our tits. I have bigger ones, " joked Alyona Alyona.

At the same time, Jerry Heil admitted that Farion's words affected her personally. She even tried to find fault with linguistics itself, but in the end she agreed with everyone's right to their own opinion.

"It affected me then. I was like: "Now I'll see if these names and surnames are Ukrainian". And she really has an ancient Ukrainian surname and name. I have nothing to complain about, but a person has the right to his opinion, " said Jerry Hail.

This is not the first time that Iryna Farion has criticized famous Ukrainians. Earlier, she criticized Andrii Danylko for using surzhik, which caused a new wave of discussions in society. It is interesting that Danylko himself answered quite sharply, comparing a linguist with food.

Conflicts surrounding language issues and Ukrainian identities are not new for Ukrainian society. They often become a field for discussions and disputes that affect different sections of the population.
