Actors Demand Justice: Scandal at Kyiv's Young Theatre
The recent return of director Andriy Bilous to the helm of Kyiv's Young Theatre has sparked a firestorm of protests. Actors and supporters gathered outside the theatre and Kyiv City State Administration demanding justice amid allegations of inappropriate behavior by the artistic director.
Protests Erupt: Voices of the Discontent
The demonstration drew attention as passionate voices rose against Bilous's reinstatement. Daria Barikhashvili, an actress at the theatre, shared her harrowing personal experience, claiming to have received unsolicited messages of a sexual nature from Bilous. Her words resonated with many, highlighting a deep-seated issue within the theatre's walls.
"How can one work with someone who behaves like this with their actresses – cornering them backstage and more, " Barikhashvili expressed.
The Theatre Community Unites
Other actors, including Vladyslav Porozhnii and Illia Choporov, stood in solidarity with Barikhashvili. They were adamant in their calls for the termination of Bilous's contract, underscoring the urgency for ethical leadership in cultural institutions.
"We gathered because our previous protest led nowhere. We want the public to know this is not just slander. These are truly terrifying experiences happening within our theatre, " Choporov declared.
Controversy Continues: The Director's Return
Despite a commission's findings recommending his removal, Bilous returned to work on March 14, claiming his temporary leave was self-imposed to avoid speculation. His return has only intensified the controversy, leaving many questioning the decision-making processes within the Kyiv City State Administration.
The allegations against Bilous include inappropriate conduct towards students at the Karpenko-Kary University and theatre actresses. Although an internal review was conducted, the lack of decisive action has fueled further outrage within the theatre community. As pressure mounts, the question remains: will justice prevail, or will these voices be drowned out in the chaos of institutional oversight?
