Drama Unfolds: Controversial Academic Honor Amid Scandal

In a surprising turn of events, Andriy Bilous, a renowned actor and director, recently received the academic title of Associate Professor of Drama at the Kyiv National University of Theater, amid a swirling scandal. The accolade was officially documented in order No. 621 of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, sparking widespread discussion across the country.

The Controversy Brewing

The honor comes in the wake of serious allegations of sexual harassment made by several former students of the university. The scandal erupted in January 2025 when Sophia Sapozhnik publicly accused Bilous of indecent advances, claiming he requested intimate photos during her studies. This revelation opened the floodgates to similar stories from other students, intensifying the spotlight on the prestigious academic institution.

"All accusations are absurd and baseless, " Bilous declared, dismissing the allegations as a targeted effort to remove him from his position due to internal conflicts.

The Battle Within

As tensions rose, 46 employees from the Young Theater petitioned the Kyiv City State Administration to have Bilous temporarily relieved of his duties. A special commission later recommended the termination of his contract, but legal hurdles prevented any immediate action. Meanwhile, the Kyiv police have launched an investigation under Article 153, focusing on sexual violence, yet no formal charges have been filed against Bilous.

Support and Protest

The theatrical community remains divided, with some rallying behind Bilous and others calling for his resignation. A protest labeled "Young Without Bilous!" took place in March, signaling the ongoing unrest. Cultural icons like Bohdan Benyuk have spoken in defense of Bilous, suggesting that the media have blown the situation out of proportion.
