On Sunday, September 8, Odesa lost one of the most iconic figures of its theater scene - Valery Bassel, Honored Artist of Ukraine, died at the age of 85.

Legacy of a legendary artist

Valery Bassel was not only a talented actor, but also a director, teacher and an outstanding creative person. His contribution to the development of theatrical art is difficult to overestimate. During the 85 years of his life, Bassel took part in more than 60 film projects and numerous theater productions.

Memory of colleagues and fans

The Odesa Academic Puppet Theater, where Valery worked since 2012, announced his death on Facebook:

"It is with deep sadness that we inform you that Valery Mykhailovych Bassel, Honored Artist of Ukraine, actor, director, teacher, unique creative personality, guru of our theater, passed away today [September 8]. He was 85 years old. This is a huge loss for theater Odessa. Condolences to all relatives and supporters of the artist's talent"

Dedicated to the theater until the end

Valery Bassel left a mark in the hearts of many of his colleagues and students. Ukrainian actress Maria Khomutova shared her memories on Facebook:

"A legendary figure of theater Odesa, he created a wonderful separate world – the Bassel Jewish Theater. I saw several performances there when I was just a teenager, at the beginning of my theater journey in Odesa."

Farewell to the artist

Farewell to Valery Bassel will take place on Tuesday, September 10, next to the Odessa Academic Puppet Theater at 15 Pastera Street in Odessa. This will be an opportunity for all fans of his talent to show their respect and appreciation.

Contribution to cinema and theater

During his career, Valery Bassel became a part of many famous film projects, including "The Meeting Place Can't Be Changed", "The Magical Voice of Gelsomino", "The Green Van" and many others. Since 1972, he has worked at the Odesa Regional Academic Drama Theater, and since 1992, he has been a director at the Channel 7 and STD radio and television companies. In 1995, he founded his own theater "Bustle Fuss" at the Jewish Cultural Center in Odessa.

The memory of Valery Bassel will remain in the hearts of many who were lucky enough to know him and work with him. This is a great loss for the Odessa theater community.
