Ukrainian cinema conquers the world: a new breakthrough in cinematography
Ukrainian cinematography is experiencing an incredible renaissance, which forces us to talk about it as an important element not only of the cultural but also of the political scene. All-out war not only changed the lives of millions, but also brought to light the potential that had long remained in the shadows.
From winning the Oscar to international recognition
The Ukrainian documentary film "20 days in Mariupol" won the Oscar 2024, which symbolizes a new era in the history of our cinema. This achievement not only confirms the high level of Ukrainian films, but also opens the door to international venues for our filmmakers.
Expansion of horizons
The popularity of Ukrainian films abroad is growing, and this is not just a coincidence. Such films as "La Palisade" and "The Porcelain War" have already appeared among the nominees for "Oscar 2025". This shows that Ukrainian cinema is becoming competitive.
Changes in society
The film industry in Ukraine is not just developing — it is becoming the voice of the nation. Young filmmakers are actively using the documentary style to highlight topics that were previously overlooked by the general public. The creators strive to tell the truth about the war and convey the emotional burden of the displaced and the heroism of our military.
"The military genre now needs to be promoted to the masses, because foreigners have forgotten that the war is still going on in Ukraine, " says director Alan Badoev.
Cancellation culture
On the other hand, the cancellation culture has affected Russian content, which is now considered unacceptable in Ukraine. Society strongly reacts to any attempts to popularize Russian products, especially at international festivals.
In the conditions of rapid changes, Ukrainians find their identity through cinema, which, like never before, unites and gives hope.
