The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences surprises everyone again by publishing the qualifying lists of films that can be nominated for the 97th Academy Awards. Ukrainian cinematographers are not left out, because this year the list includes five films created by our masters or in collaboration with them.

Ukrainian films are in the spotlight

It is interesting that most of these works are devoted to the topic of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which remains relevant and painful for many. According to the Oscars' official website, the films are already being considered as potential nominees in several categories, including International Feature Film, Animated Feature Film and Documentary Feature Film.

Drama and tension: "La Palisade"

"La Palisade" by Philip Sotnichenko is a film that takes us back to 1996, when Ukraine had just regained its independence. The plot centers on a detective and a forensic psychiatrist investigating the murder of a colleague. The story is full of tension and intrigue, and the characters are forced to deal with complex human relationships.

"The wife of the deceased adds fuel to the fire with her mysterious actions"

Vacation-turned-escape: "Under the Volcano"

Damian Kotsur in the film "Under the Volcano" tells about a Ukrainian family that went on vacation in Tenerife, but their plans are changed by the news about the war. This film is a touching story of refugees, shown through the eyes of a teenager, Sofia.

The power of documentary: "After the Rain" and "The Porcelain War"

The documentary films "After the Rain: Children Stolen by Putin Return Home" by Sarah McCartney and "The Porcelain War" by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontiev captivate the viewer with the reality of Ukrainian realities. They tell different but equally important stories that unite human suffering and courage.

Conclusions and hopes

Time will tell whether these films will win the coveted Oscar. However, we can already say that Ukrainian cinema is increasingly becoming a part of world cinema, telling stories that touch hearts.
