Ukrainian cinema is back on the world stage! At the beginning of September, the International Film Festival in Toronto will present the world premiere of the film "You are Space" directed by Pavel Ostrikov. This is the full-length debut of the artist, who previously gained popularity thanks to his short works.

"You are space": new Ukrainian sci-fi

This science fiction film tells the story of Andriy, a space trucker who is the only person left after the Earth explodes. However, the French scientist Catherine gets in touch with him, and Andrii goes on a journey to meet her - his last love in the universe.

Director's dreams and reality

"I started working on the film 'You are space' back in 2015, without even imagining where this story would lead me..." - says Pavlo Ostrikov. "The Toronto Film Festival is one of the best film venues in the world, and I am very pleased to start our journey there."

Production under challenges

Filming began before the full-scale invasion and continued until 2023. Five residential modules and parts of the spacecraft's exterior were built for the film. This large-scale project presented challenges to the team, which were successfully overcome.

Debut at TIFF

The film "You are Space" was selected for the Discovery program of the Toronto Film Festival, where the best works of debutants from around the world will be presented. It is important to note that the main character Andrii was played by Ukrainian theater and film actor Volodymyr Kravchuk, who is currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Ukrainian cinema on the world stage

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is an annual event that has been held since 1976. It was at TIFF that the world public got to know such names as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders. This year the festival will last from September 5 to 15.
