Ukrainian Comedy "Tolerance Lessons" Hits Screens: A Satirical Take on Society
In the midst of daily routines and constant air raid alerts, there are moments when the mind demands a break, calling for attention to mental health — simply to rest. The Ukrainian comedy "Tolerance Lessons", released in 2024, satirically portrays a society attempting to grow out of its post-Soviet past and integrate into Europe. This journey is marked by a dramatic breakdown of stereotypes and fears, heavily sown by propaganda.
A Family in Crisis: The Najdyuks' Struggle
The film centers around the Najdyuk family, living in an unrepaired apartment, burdened with debts not only for the mortgage but also for utilities. Their previous home, a small one-room apartment, couldn't accommodate the family of four: mother Nadya, a teacher; father Zenyk, unemployed; daughter Diana, an aspiring actress; and son Denys, an auto mechanic. The new apartment needs renovation, much like the family's relationships, which have multiple cracks.
A Unique Solution: State Integration Program
Nadya Najdyuk (played by Olena Uzlyuk), the sole breadwinner, decides to involve the family in a state program promoting European integration. Under this program, families hosting a representative of the LGBTQ+ community for three weeks receive a 90% discount on utility bills. Their guest, Vasyl Zayets (played by Akmal Gurezov), is a plumber by profession with a passion for photography and yoga.
Breaking Stereotypes and Hidden Secrets
Will the Najdyuks manage to overcome their stereotypical views? What secrets does their son Denys (Oleksandr Piskunov) and daughter Diana (Karolina Mruga) hide? How will Zenyk's (Oleksandr Yarema) interest in massage therapy develop? And what will be the reaction of their neighbor Hrysha (Borys Heorhiievskyi), a classic homophobe and former paratrooper?
"Tolerance and respect should be the foundation of societal relationships, " says Nelli Yakovleva, Deputy Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
A Single Location, Maximum Impact
The entire film is shot in the Najdyuk family's apartment, meticulously recreating a Soviet-era "Khrushchyovka." Despite the limited space, the film explores deep emotional and social issues, showcasing Vasyl's patience and psychological skills, including body therapy, which help mend the family's strained relationships.
Watch "Tolerance Lessons" on Netflix and Sweet.tv and dive into a story that emphasizes the importance of self-respect and respect for others.
