In the world of pop culture, there is always room for intrigue and manipulation, but what happened in Ukraine in the 90s and early 2000s goes beyond the usual rivalry. The documentary My Beautiful Colonization reveals how Russia purposefully used the soft power of pop culture to undermine Ukrainian identity.

Cultural Weapons: Invasion Through Television and Music

The end of the 20th century showed an incredible rise of Ukrainian talents, who finally got a voice and the opportunity to freely create in their native language. But this became a challenge for the northern neighbor, which did not want to let Ukraine out of the orbit of its influence. Russian cultural policy began to operate according to schemes similar to those once used by Nazi Germany in relation to Austria. Goebbels' office wisely convinced the Austrians that they were part of the great German family.

Intervention in the Ukrainian media space: how it worked

"On a large global level, they understood: show business is one of the tools of influence..." - recalls the musician Fozzi.

Through serials, musical texts and TV shows, the Russians gradually displaced everything Ukrainian, imposing their "common cultural field". While Ukrainian artists faced restrictions on radio and television, Russian performers occupied the stage and airwaves without hindrance.

Revival of Ukrainian culture: how to break through

Today, the situation has changed: Ukrainian culture is experiencing a renaissance. Legislative changes, establishment of institutions and support funds helped preserve the identity. Mykola Knyazhytskyi notes: "It was not possible to do everything, but the dome was created...". And although this dome is not perfect, it has become an important shield for the protection of Ukrainian values.

My Beautiful Colonization is an important step towards understanding how culture can become a battlefield. He reminds us that supporting your own is not just fashionable, but necessary.
