"We were thrilled, " Vakarchuk recalled, "thinking we might just take home the victory. But fate had other plans."

The twist came during the awards ceremony. Despite their high score, the band found themselves sharing it with another group. The decision was made, and Okean Elzy was awarded the second prize—four tracksuits—instead of a recording session they had hoped for.

"After that, " Vakarchuk shared, "we sold three of the tracksuits, used the money to book a studio, and recorded a single that never saw the light of day."

This experience left a lasting impression on the band, leading to a pivotal decision. They chose to avoid competitions that rank performances, including Eurovision.
