Ukrainian illustrator Daria Zimenko expressed her indignation at the censoring of her performance in a Polish theater
Ukrainian illustrator Daria Zimenko, who survived the occupation and violence at the hands of the Russian military, recently faced injustice at the Polish Theater of Facts at the Grotowski Institute in Wroclaw.
Disappeared messages
On June 23, Daria was invited as a speaker for a reading, where she shared her story about the events in Kyiv region at the beginning of 2022. However, some of her important messages are missing from the published version of the video.
Theater policy for reconciliation
"Today I received a recording of the readings and discussion. And what did I see? That some of my answers were cut out! Because the theater tolerates Russians, and I said something that goes against this policy, " Daria noted on Facebook.
The illustrator indicated that the organizers did not warn her about the political position of the theater, which called for "reconciliation of nations" and invited the Russian director to the festival.
Symbolic reconciliation?
"That is, they put a Russian director who talked about 'love and the art of politics' in the same space, and I, a Ukrainian woman who suffered from the Russian occupiers. And as a result, according to the organizers and participants of this event, a symbolic reconciliation was supposed to take place and hope for friendship. For obvious and understandable reasons, this did not happen, " the author shared in the post.
Reaction of the theater
After numerous complaints from organizations and activists, the theater explained that the speaker's comments disappeared due to technical problems with the Internet connection, and not because of censorship.
"With great surprise and concern, we noticed that the end of the discussion was not broadcast correctly. It was simply a technical error that did not depend on the organizers, nor on the experienced and professional technical specialists who were involved in the broadcast, " says the apology from theater
Summary
This incident highlighted the importance of open and honest discussions, especially in times of war. It is important to remember that attempts at reconciliation without taking into account the context can only deepen the conflict.
